Santo Domingo is the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic.The
city is located on the Caribbean Sea, at the mouth of the Ozama River.
Founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496, it is the oldest continuously
inhabited European settlement in the Americas and was the first seat of
Spanish colonial rule in the New World. Santo Domingo came to be known
as the "Gateway to the Caribbean". It lies within the boundaries of the Distrito
Nacional (D.N.; "National District"), itself bordered on three sides by Santo
Domingo Province.

de la República Dominicana. Fue fundada en 1496 por Bartolomé Colón en
la margen oriental del río Ozama y luego trasladada por Nicolás de Ovando
en 1502 a la margen occidental del mismo río (parte que hoy ocupa). Es una
ciudad cosmopolita, pujante y está cargada de un profundo pasado histórico
asociado a la conquista del continente americano.Es de hecho, la mayor
ciudad de la isla de La Española.
In Santo Domingo, der Hauptstadt der Dominikanischen Republik, wohnen
fast drei Millionen Menschen - ein Drittel der neun Millionen Dominikaner.
Damit ist Santo Domingo nicht nur das politische und wirtschaftliche Zentrum
des Landes, sondern auch die größte Stadt in der Karibik. Santo Domingo ist
sehenswert. In vielen Handbüchern ist zu lesen, man dürfe als Besucher in
der Dominikanischen Republik keineswegs die Hauptstadt versäumen. Don
Bartolomeo, der Bruder von Christoph Kolumbus, gründete die Stadt 1496
als "Santo Domingo de Guzmán". 1502 entstand dort das Kolonialviertel -
die "Zona Colonial", wie die kleine Altstadt dort heißt. Das ist heute der älteste

With so many options to choose from, the hardest part of planning a trip to the Dominican Republic is planning your departure for home. Seven major airlines serve the Dominican Republic, so you'll always have a good choice of flights. With seven international airports and a streamlined immigration process, visiting paradise has never been easier. Even communication is trouble-free because although Spanish is the official language, most employees in hotels and tourist spots speak English.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The Tourist Card is a required document for residents of authorized countries to enter the Dominican Republic exclusively for touristic purposes without a visa. It can be obtained at the Dominican Consulates or directly upon arrival at the airports in the Dominican Republic. The cost is US $10 and is valid for 30 days. (Please note that some of the tour operators include the Tourist Card in their packages.)
Year-round sports, effervescent nightlife, distinctive souvenir shopping, magnificent national parks, and world class gambling make for a jam-packed vacation to do list. But when you see the spectacular beaches, you might just want to pull up a chair and relax.
